Unlike Europe, there is no single regulatory mark or system that is applied to products sold or used on the North America market. The legislation is similar between USA and Canada but different and therefore manufacturers should be mindful that there may be technical differences between them.
The equivalent of the EMC and Radio Equipment Directive in Europe is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the USA and by Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) covering both intentional and unintentional radiators. The FCC and ISED also regulate the exposure from RF fields to ensure that users are not exposed to harmful health effects of using RF devices for long periods of time.
Safety is controlled in North America by the Occupational Safety and Health administration (OSHA) who in turn appoint a number of Nationally Recognized Test Laboratories (NRTLs) to perform the safety assessments. Dependant of the type and use of the product, 3rd party certification may be required to legally sell your product on the market.
Element has strategically positioned test labs that enables testing to be performed and then certified for many markets throughout the world including North America and Europe in addition to many other countries through our network of partners or agencies.
